MODULE 3

BINGE EATING, OVEREATING & DIETING

In Module 3, we focus on some of the most important unwanted eating challenges: binge eating, overeating, and emotional eating. Of all of today’s challenges with food and body, this triad tends to be among the most difficult for our clients to “kick.”

And as you’ll learn, the multiplicity of factors that drive these eating concerns – nutritional, emotional, and psychological in nature – are often quite complex and nuanced. So we’ll explore the many varied reasons behind binge eating, overeating, and emotional eating, as well as key transformational strategies for helping clients overcome them. You’ll also discover the neuroscience behind appetite, and how this impacts what and how much we eat.

Additionally in Module 3, we’ll be diving into chronic dieting, and how to help people who have been trapped in the “yo-yo” dieting cycle for years – or even, decades. We’ll explore the science of long-term food restriction and its impact on metabolism. And we’ll take a deep dive into working with macronutrient balance as a way to transform unwanted eating challenges.

Importantly, you’ll learn the skill of doing a dynamic, complete client intake based on the principles of eating psychology.

Module 3 is rich in clinical and coaching distinctions that can create powerful client breakthroughs, and forever change the way you work with clients.

Let’s get started with Marc’s Overview Video for Module 3 – and then progress through the rest of the checklist items below.

Greetings, friends, Mark David here, founder of the Institute, your guide, mentor, and teacher on this journey. It is good to see you again. Thank you. Really thank you for all your work. Thanks for all your effort and your inspiration so far. So we've started all of us out with what I think are the juiciest, meatiest, most raw, most vegan, most powerful, most nutrient dense material. Just to give you a firm foundation. You just learned about weight loss and body image. And those really are arguably the two most challenging conditions to deal with when it comes to people's relationship with food and body. So with that said, I hope, and I trust that you had some openings, that you had some insights, maybe some breakthroughs, and of course, I hoped you absorbed the information in a good way. Of course, you can always come back to it because I know it's a lot and review the material to assimilate it even more. So again, I wanna say I am honored to be with you on this journey, and I applaud you for your time, your energy, your commitment, everything that you're putting into this training, and really for the investment that you've made for yourself, which will impact others. You know that. So congratulations on that. We are about to dive into overeating, binge eating, and chronic or endless dieting. I'm using those last two terms interchangeably. Now, let's start out with the good news. I think you are going to love this material because the tools and the maps and the distinctions, the strategies that you are going to be learning, especially when it comes to overeating and binge eating, are good and they're effective and they can work pretty quick. I, I mean that weight loss isn't easy to work with. Body image isn't easy to work with. Overeating and binge eating. Not easier, but way easier. So the strategies you're going to be learning to really help you hit the target when it comes to your clients seeing results, assuming of course, that your client does their part and does the work. So if you will allow me to be bold enough to say that just about any overeating or binge eating client in the world can benefit from the strategies we are about to dive into that you're gonna learn. So my friends, you simply need to be persistent when you work with these strategies and persistent with your client, really in terms of cheerleading them to practice, because practice is where it's at. Transformation don't happen for free. Um, breakthroughs, you know, come in any area of life provided you and I do our part. So as always, you are learning a a positive eating psychology approach. So when my binge eating or overeating or emotionally eating client walks into my office, I'm not sitting there thinking, oh my goodness, you poor person. You've gotta get rid of this awful enemy. This is so bad, so terrible, poor, unfortunate you, you're binge eating over reading, emotional eating. Well, nothing, my friends could be further from the truth. It's not what I'm thinking. I am actually happy for my client. I mean that I'm celebrating inside. Now, I'm not going to say that out loud, but it's true. That's my energy. That's the vibe inside. I'm thinking to myself, thank goodness you have this binge eating issue. Thank goodness you're overeating because it's a teacher. It's a teacher, and you are my client. You're about to learn something so useful and valuable. Now, let's even you and I take a risk and say, my friends, that a person's binge eating, overeating, emotional eating. It's a divine messenger. It's information from the universe, it's body wisdom, and this is everything I'm thinking to myself. I'm thinking to myself, we're gonna use this challenge my client's overeating, their binge eating, whatever it is, just as a beautiful opportunity to grow. That's a great way to celebrate life. So with this perspective, we put ourselves as professionals in the best possible situation to truly help our client in an honest, real, and sustainable way. That's what I'm going for. Now, I'm always reminding my client of this in some way, in a language that I think they can hear, that there's something in their unwanted eating challenge that they're going to use to learn about their life and deepen and mature as a human being. So they're gonna hear that from me. I'm gonna let my client know, yeah, we're gonna work on your binge eating, emotional eating, et cetera, but you're going to grow and transform more as a person. You're gonna grow in character. And certainly with the right effort, my client will improve their relationship with food and their metabolic health. So really what I'm talking about is setting the tone, your inner tone and the container for your work with a client. I'm always, always, always letting my client know through my words, through my actions, through my voice, through my mannerisms, everything that I am. I'm hopeful for them. I'm excited for them. I am committed to their journey, and that there is truly a way through their challenge, and there's a beautiful light at the end of the tunnel. It's the space I'm holding, and that's what I'm asking you to hold. So I always let my client know that there's something in this for them that's beautiful on the Other other side. Now they don't know that right now they don't feel it, but that's the space I hold. And you, my client will gain more confidence around all of this because you're going to really learn how to listen to overeating. So we're gonna help our clients learn to listen to their binge eating, to hear all of the key distinctions. This is what we're gonna focus on as professionals. The key distinctions in the realm of nutrition, mind-body nutrition, eating psychology, and more. So you can choose as a practitioner, the right tools to work with each specific client. And again, you're gonna have some excellent tools. Now, more good news about all this, what you're gonna learn when it comes to binge eating and overeating can certainly impact weight. Because so many of your weight challenge clients will tell you, well, I'm eating too much, or I'm binge eating too much. Well, the work we're going to do relates to weight. So it's going to work in a good way really for any of your clients who are coming to see you for that concern. At the same time, we're going to be learning about this thing called chronic or endless dieting. Personally, I think this is a fascinating phenomenon, and it is a worldwide, I'm gonna say problem that needs a lot of wisdom and a lot of insight. My friends, I mean this because we're training each successive generation. You know this to get hooked on useless, ineffective, soul crushing, lifelong dieting. That just doesn't work. By the way, another way to say chronic dieting is the person who's calorie restricting all the time. The person who is afraid to gain weight, so they skip meals or they're afraid to gain weight. So they severely limit their fat intake perhaps, or their protein intake or their carbs, or they artificially try to suppress their appetite. They push it away. They try to ignore and overpower their natural hunger. They try to deny pleasure. Maybe they're counting calories, maybe they're counting fat grams, they're in the numbers, perhaps doing any of what I just mentioned, some of it, all of it. The bottom line though here, is that there are people who are constantly on a diet and they're living in dieting consciousness that's not okay, and it's absolutely ruining their life, whether they realize it or not. Okay? We're still many endless or chronic dieters are impacting their actual metabolism. It is not just an emotional issue, meaning their overall health, their actual calorie burning capacity. It might be that they're impacting their digestion in a negative way. Their energy, their mood, their brain powering cognition, their immunity and more. It is shocking. And this is a health challenge that goes under the radar, and it all comes from chronic dieting. This is a hidden dis-ease Of our times that I believe needs to be addressed head on. So that's what we're gonna do in this next set of great conversations. Most clients, by the way, will not come to see you and say, Hey, I've got a chronic dieting issue. Fix me, help me, please. Okay, so that's not why they're coming to see you. You're gonna be learning how to snip these clients out, because one of your main jobs is not just to be a coach or counselor, but you're learning how to be a teacher in a lot of ways. You're learning how to be a mentor and a guide for your client. You're learning how to alert your client to the root cause or causes of their challenges that they have probably been completely asleep to chronic dieting can be such a thing. Sometimes our job is to alert our client when we see they're gone down the wrong road. People believe in dieting. This blows my mind in an almost religious way, despite the fact that they have been dieting for decades without any long-term sustainable results or happiness. People who have been dieting for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years, I meet them. So sometimes it's our job to alert our clients that they're living in dieting consciousness and that they're going in a direction that's taking them in the opposite direction of success. That's what happens when you chronically diet. So when you stay in your commitment as a coach and a counselor, when you stay in your commitment to help your client wake up and to reach their highest goals in life, that's your inner commitment. You are going to be in a powerful place as a practitioner. Yes, you're gonna help them with their smaller goals, overeating, binge eating, emotion eating, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. But your commitment is not merely to help them get rid of a symptom or suppress it or push it away or sweep it under the rug. Your commitment is to help your client be, you know, this, the best, most self-expressed version of themselves that they can possibly be in this world. Because when we do that, things fall into place. You are here to help them be the person that they are meant to be in this life on planet earth. That's your client's biggest commitment when whether they know it or not, that's anybody's biggest commitment, by the way. So I don't care, really. If my client isn't aware of that commitment, that's fine. My job is to slowly help wake them up to it. Who am I supposed to be? How am I supposed to self-express? What am I supposed to be doing with my life? What kind of relationship should I be in? How am I supposed to express my mind, my intellect, my emotions, my creativity, my desire, my passion, my sensuality, my body, my embodiment, my spirituality? What do I do with all that? When we Help someone towards their biggest commitment, all the other little things begin to fall into place like never before. So I am doing my best to help you be an awesome practitioner. That's my goal. That's what this conversation is all about. That's what this training is all about. We must always put first things first. I believe if we want to come out ahead, you know, how many clients do I see? Who will tell me, you know, I've been dieting 10, 20, 30, or 40 or more years. It still blows my mind. Really. They might as well tell me when I hear them say that. I hear, I've been in a self-imposed prison for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years. That's what I hear. I will tell any human being. If you have been doing the same thing for 10, 20, 30, 40 years and it doesn't work, you should probably consider changing your strategy. So when you help that endlessly dieting client see the error in their ways, when you do the intellectual interventions, you're going to actually help give them their life back. I mean that you will more than give your client their money's worth when it comes to the distinctions and strategies that you're going to be learning. And I, I do wanna say, you'll be learning the slow baby step strategies and as well as some of the quick intervention ones that can powerfully steer your client out of chronic dieting consciousness and into a healthier relationship with food. Part of it's a short game. Part of it's a long game when you have a healthy relationship with food, when your client has a healthy relationship with food, they're, we're available for the rest of our life. You're available to be you. You're available to step into your potential. We're available to step into our earning power, our love power, our relationship power, our work power, our parenting power, our spiritual power, our creative power, all of it. But when our mind is being pulled away by, oh my goodness, is this too fattening? Oh no, I shouldn't be eating this. Oh my God, I'm hungry. Or Oh, here comes my appetite. Or, oh, how do I control it so I don't gain weight? When that's the radio station playing in our head, we are pulling ourselves down oftentimes without even realizing it. We're crushing our own soul. I mean that, and most likely our metabolic power as well. You know, for so many people, there is a nonsense radio station that we put on and play in our heads every single day, ceaselessly. It's just a bad podcast that ends up robbing the world of the gifts that we have to give. It's self attacking. It's self rejecting. So when your client is doing that, if you are doing that, we are actually short-changing the world and all the people in our lives. That's what we're doing. And the good news is that's what you and I are here to change. So this is not just changing somebody's little habit and managing their appetite. So again, you're gonna learn some great strategies that will in a lot of ways be easier than what you've learned so far. You're gonna see how some of these tools work, work pretty quickly with a client, and I'm confident you're gonna see good results. I think you'll be happy. So for those of you that have been practicing a long time, or even a moderate amount of time, uh, there's a good chance you'll be quite surprised in terms of the effectiveness of what you're going to learn, the insights that you're gonna have about your clients, and some of the breakthroughs that they're going to have with their binge eating and overeating. So really, once again, this is my way of saying I'm happy for you, happy for us, excited for us. Uh, by the way, we're also gonna cover some of the basics of how to do a general intake for any kind of client and a general intake, meaning first session. The first session is such a juicy and powerful time, and I wanna share with you my best tools, my best tricks and distinctions to make this all important session. A great one for you and your client. So, ugh, it's just so important, and I really love this part of the work, and I'd love for you to learn to love it as well, because when you are loving the intake session, your client feels that because this work is fun, it's amazing, it's deep, it's powerful. So you're also gonna learn some of the basics of how to deal with any type of client for subsequent sessions. So not just the first session, but some of the key strategies of how you want to be thinking beyond the first session. Meaning, what should I have my eye on for all the other sessions that I do with a client? What are some of the best practices for subsequent sessions? What should I look out for? So I'm gonna offer you, again, some great guidelines to experiment with, to play with, and to practice. Everybody has their preferences, but I'm gonna give you my greatest hits. We're also going to spend some in-depth time on macronutrient balance. Now, briefly, macronutrient balance means working with your clients on the approximate ratios of protein, fat, and carbohydrates in their diet. Let me just say this. I have found that this is one of the top three best nutritional techniques to create change and breakthrough with so many of our clients. In other words, there's a plethora of conditions, and especially in this case, binge eating, overeating, chronic dieting, where you can help a huge number of clients by playing with macronutrient balance. So once I notice, hmm, my client looks like they're pretty low in essential fats, or they're protein deprived, or they're macronutrient imbalance in Some way, I've got a powerful and effective place to work with that. Oftentimes we can see some pretty fast results, and I'm talking about within a week or two or three weeks at the most. You'll soon see what I mean here. Um, and I'm gonna mention in advance that that working with macronutrient balance doesn't have to be an exact science. And the reason is because it isn't. There are zero no magic numbers here. So you need to learn how to be a smart human. You need to learn how to eyeball things, so to speak. Gonna be looking at your client's diet and eyeballing macronutrient balance. And when it comes to macronutrient balance, you're gonna make some great changes here. You are gonna help your clients in a big way, and for them, it's going to be a very noticeable way. So here's even more good news, my friends, for your chronic dieting clients, what you're going to learn is that you'll have people come to see you perhaps for a digestive issue or a mood issue or a fatigue issue. And really their actual issue is that they're calorie restricting IE, their chronically dieting. And they are likely macronutrient balance, but they're coming to see you for something else. So the good news here is you are going to learn how to be so effective in spotting such clients. So you can help them detox from their toxic nutritional belief called I need to limit my calories, limit my fat, limit my protein, or limit the amount of food I eat. Because when a client is doing all that, all of a sudden what can happen is a host of other unwanted symptoms, actual physical, metabolic health symptoms can arise. Your client can have intense binging later on in the mid-afternoon or the evening. They can have strange and unusual cravings. They could have mood issues, they could have fatigue, digestive issues, poor cognition, forgetfulness, but it's all actually related to calorie restricting, to chronic dieting, which means decreased nutritional status, which is what's causing all these concerns in the first place. Now, these clients have probably gone from doctor to doctor, maybe natural healers, chiropractors, et cetera. They've done everything, they've tried it all, supplements, this, that, the other thing, and they don't get anywhere because no one's been able to really spot what's happening. So you're gonna learn how to walk such clients down a road where you are educating and cheerleading them into waking up and empowering themselves in their relationship with food. That is what it's all about. So once again, my friends, please remember, you are not here to fix anyone because we're not broken. You're here to love your clients. We're here to guide them, mentor them, inspire them, educate them, and walk alongside them in their journey. Yes, you're going to be giving them information that they might not know. Information though generally is not what wakes people up. Information is not what makes the emotional pain go away. Information isn't what saves you and me, generally speaking, what helps us come out of our slumber, what helps us get unstuck? What helps us step into empowerment is when we get inspired, when we get mentored and coached, when we're seen, when we're heard, when we're listened to, when we're understood, when somebody in the professional universe truly drops in with us. And then when we deliver the right pieces of information, it lands. So getting stuck in the overeating universe, by the way, drains people's energy, getting stuck in the cycles of binge eating, and then we die, and then we binge eat again. That is robbing people of their life force. And from this place, and in kind of a strange way, food for so many people becomes their primary relationship. They're literally sleeping in bed with food. Uh, and then they wonder why they don't have love in their life, or they wonder why they can't get the things they want, because their primary relationship is with an eating challenge. Once again, the good news is that's where we come in to do some good work. So this is all about you learning how to coach your clients, your friends, your loved ones, yourself, into reclaiming power and dignity. So once again, my friends, I'm excited for you that you're getting exposed to this material, happy for me that I have the opportunity to be your guide. Thanks as always, thanks for your commitment for doing good work in this world, work that's truly needed. So please enjoy the material and I shall see you on the other side.
