ADVANCED PRACTITIONER SKILLS
Section 12
Some final thoughts about where the fields of eating psychology and nutrition are going, and how to best empower yourself as a practitioner.

DOWNLOADS
And greetings once again, my friends.
This is Mark David, founder of the Institute
for the Psychology of Eating.
Let's have a conversation about the future of the work.
And this is our
last conversation in this training.
So we are here to finish up.
We're here to wrap things up.
We're here to put the, put the cherry on top of the cake.
We're here to take a deep breath right now
and come into our final moments together.
Right now, I wanna say, oh,
before I jump into this conversation,
congratulations in advance.
It's always, it's always a little strange, a little hard,
a little sweet, a little bittersweet to finish up
and to come to the end.
And endings are always heralding
and signaling new beginnings.
So we've had quite a journey together,
and here we are concluding it.
And I am just sitting here
celebrating you right now and celebrating us.
So let me say a few final words
and see if we can oh,
end on a positive note.
End on a good note
and end on the kind of note that really
lets us know this is, uh, not a true
forever ending.
Again, it's just the beginning of a whole new journey.
You know, as we finish up our work together, it just might be to rem good to remind ourselves of some of the important truths and or distinctions that we've been swimming with learning, playing with. I wanna close out by asking some good and powerful questions. I wish to be thoughtful with you. I wish to be a bit soulful with you, and to remind you that this work in so many ways asks us to have a lot of heart. It asks us to have a lot of soul. It really asks us to show up with people and use everything we know. Really, when you're with a client, when I'm with a client, I'm bringing everything I know. I'm bringing all of my life experience. No matter what it is, I'm doing my best to bring all of myself to the table. Whatever that means in the moment, whatever that means for each person. You know, what a good feeling when you feel like you've given your best, you've given all of you. And what a good feeling when you're doing your best to help another human being along their journey and help another human being with their challenges around food, body, and health. You know, such things are not easy and the people who seek your help really want it, and they need it and they desire it. Um, what a beautiful position for us to be in, to be approached in that way and to have the opportunity to help someone.
I love big questions. I love powerful questions. And these are some of the ongoing lifelong questions that I find myself asking myself.
Where's life calling you as a person? Where's life calling you? How are you being asked to grow right now?
Ask that question of the universe on behalf of yourself. You can't go wrong. What a big, beautiful question. Where are you being called professionally? What is the wisdom of life asking of you?
My friends? These are guiding stars. These are guiding lights. This is oftentimes the light we follow when it's a little dark outside because we don't always know what's next. We live in a lot of uncertainty. Life is an interesting package. We're here for a short journey. Let's, let's make the best of it. Let's make the best of what we have. Let's use our talents and our gifts, our skills. Let's use who we are and what we came in with to the best of our ability. Where's life calling me? How's life asking me to grow?
You know what that question does? It assumes that there's a grander wisdom. And when we assume there's a grander wisdom, my friends takes a little pressure off. It might even take a lot of pressure off.
It doesn't necessarily make things easy,
but it puts us in the right place to succeed. It puts us in the right place to hear the answers that truly matter most.
I think when we tap into a greater wisdom, when we acknowledge that there's a greater wisdom, when we acknowledge that there's something far bigger than me driving my life, driving my career, driving who I am and how I express myself in the world, there's something so much bigger than me at the helm.
Part of us can relax
your practice, your professional practice has a wisdom to it. If you have taken this training because you are indeed using it to be a helping professional and or you're already some kind of helping professional your, your practice, your professional practice, it has an agenda for you. And it's beyond our control. It's literally our job to listen. I will say this though, if you have chosen a path where you are looking to help others, whether that's full-time, sometimes part-time,
that path is, is Nly looking to make you and I better people, fuller people? It's, it's looking to make us deeper and wiser and more real and more kind and more effective. Because I think life wants us to succeed. Life wants us to not only survive, but to thrive.
You know, if I say that in another way, our professional practice doesn't have any issue in sharpening us, in honing us down and poking at our ego and showing us some of our blind spots in revealing some of our dated beliefs and showing us where we have all kinds of lessons to learn in life. And that's a good thing, my friends, that's the invisible workshop you and I are in. That is the brilliant classroom called your life. Your life is a brilliant classroom. It is deeply designed and specifically designed for you.
And I'm assuming that it is the best design for you. I know it doesn't always feel that way. I know other people seem to have more of this, that, or the other thing that we wish to have.
And life has given us our own unique journey. It's given us our own unique destiny. We're here to embrace that.
I believe that your practice will give to you as you give to it.
IE we reap what we IE, you're making an investment. You invest your energy, you invest your time, you invest your heart, you invest your soul.
And you and I, we're here to give our gifts first and foremost in our practice.
That's your job. Your job is to give your gifts
is not to sit there and worry.
We're also here as professionals to quickly, as best we can move through our fears.
As you and I move through our fears, there's something very interesting on the other side. There's goodness on the other side. There's effectiveness on the other side. There's magic on the other side.
Our professional practice is this fascinating place.
It's a zone where we are growing and discovering about ourselves. So there's something very personal about it for sure. There's something deeply inward about it for sure.
We're learning and growing
and there's these other interesting characters called our clients or our patients. And our clients are absolutely here to teach us.
Every client is teaching you something. Each client has some important lessons or unimportant lesson for us. Sometimes it's so obvious, sometimes it's not.
So I'm always encouraging you, me, us to check in to see how each client is asking you to grow. Tune in. Notice. Notice who's showing up in your practice. Who are the kinds of clients that are attracted to you
and who are the kinds of clients that you are attracted to them? Oh, I wanna work with this person, that person. These people, those people, this group, that group. And interestingly enough here who, here's who looks like they're showing up in my practice. What do you notice? Just notice it. There's no rights or wrongs here. There's just a story. There's just a journey. There's an opportunity to learn.
No need to get down on yourself. No need to belittle yourself. I think you've seen that so much of this training is learning how to help our clients be in a healthy conversation with themselves, their own life, their own journey, their own destiny. To help our clients be in a healthy conversation inside their own mind, inside their own heart, inside their own body.
You've been learning how to help your client be in better relationship with self, which means better relationship with life, which means better relationship with a higher power, better relationship with people in their lives, better relationship with this gift that they have been given, called their body.
The body is such a mystery, my friends. It's a beautiful mystery. That's what you and I have been doing. We've been diving into that mystery more deeply with the intention to be effective
because the body is always letting us know when we're on target and when we're off target. The body is letting us know where we need to wake up.
Our relationship with food, our unwanted eating challenges, they're talking to us
and you've been learning how to understand their language. You actually speak a whole different language. Now. You might not realize it.
I've noticed this time and time again with so many of our graduates, there's a part of them that actually doesn't get how much they've learned right away. And then when you start seeing clients, if you're a first time practitioner, you see very quickly how much you've learned. If you've been an already practicing practitioner, you've started to notice what you've learned and it'll grow on you for sure.
That's what I've seen over the years, my friends. This is all about your unique journey.
And of course, when you're sitting with a client, it's about their unique journey. And in order to understand their unique journey, you and I have to get a good sense of our unique journey. The unique journey that you live.
I hope you are getting from this body of work. That your life is a journey. It's an epic story. That's why you love, that's why we love the stories and the movies and the tales and the fairytales because we know deep inside that we are that story. We are that journey on some level.
And the journeys are not always sweet and easy.
Few journeys are, a few stories are, and your job is to make your journey right.
Can you honor it? Can you embrace it? Can you bless it? Even though, even though, even though, yeah, it was hard and this happened and that happened and he did this and she did that, and I didn't have this and I didn't have that. And this doesn't work. And that doesn't work. Yeah. End and end. Can you honor your journey and embrace it and bless it and make it right. 'cause it's the only one you have. It's the one you've been given.
And if you're in this training, chances are you have the kind of life where
you've been given things. You have some advantages that other people don't have. You have access to education, to understanding to people, to good foods, to good health practices that not a lot of people have. And yeah, we've had challenges.
Your job is to make your journey right? Can you see the great wisdom in it When you look back on it? Can you see how it's taught you? And can you forgive yourself? When I say forgive yourself mean for anything that you think you did wrong or any ways you feel short. Can you forgive yourself for not being perfect? For not having the perfect body in the perfect way? What you think the perfect is? Can you forgive yourself for not being the perfect eater? Can you forgive yourself for being human? Can you forgive yourself for anything? All of it? Can you forgive others? Can you let go? Can you move forward to move forward in your life?
Can you imagine a deathbed where you're lying there and you're 105 years old and you're looking up at the stars and you're going, I feel complete. I had a life well lived. I gave it my best. I gave it my all. Can you imagine that?
Who do you need to be starting from today to be that person
where when it's time for you to go, you're, you're ready.
You've done what you set out to do. You did your absolute best. You gave yourself you loved, you learned. You effort it, you practiced, you celebrated, you, smiled. You. You gave of yourself. You gave so many of the gifts that you've been given.
I think it's always good to think about supporting what has supported you.
Be willing to give as others have given to you. Chances are you've been given a lot in your life.
We're here to give back. At some point.
What goes around comes around. My friends, there's a point at which we become the givers.
It's just how it works. What a beautiful thing.
Yes, this is about you. It's about your journey. It's about your practice, it's about your work, it's about your profession. It's about how you show up in the world. And it's also about lending your support to something bigger than yourself.
You and I, being willing to be possessed by something bigger. Being willing to step, step outside myself, my little self,
and do our best to make the world a better place.
Less complaining about the world, more actions to create the world that you wish to live in. That's how we do it. It's not about saving the world. The world doesn't need to be saved.
It's about you doing your best to create the good world that you wish to live in.
You know, these days, the times that we live in, very specifically when it comes to the coaching model. The coaching model is really leveling the health professions in a beautiful way.
Anyone can be a coach.
A 90-year-old grandma, great grandma, great, great grandmama can be a coach and be a great one.
25-year-old can be a coach, man, woman, anyone.
The playing field is leveling in terms of qualifications because yes, it's good to have an education in the thing you're trying to help someone in.
And your life is your education. Your journey is your education. The work you've done on yourself as an education. Everything that you bring to the table as a person, as a man, as a woman, as a mother, father, sister, brother, everything that you know about life, about the world, about the body, about health, about food, about art, about culture, about music, about people, about being a good person in the world. You bring that to the table that qualifies you. And I mean it. So we, the collective. We are more and more moving towards a paradigm of coaching or a paradigm of mentoring. A paradigm where there is equality between us and the practitioners who are serving us. Where practitioners of all kinds have true connections with the people they're serving. True connections with their clients and their patients.
I bitterly complained for years at the nonsense I saw in the medical field. How many times have I been to doctors and doctor's offices and experts? And they spend two minutes with you. They don't even look at you. They don't pay attention. They have you fill out a form which they don't even read. They know nothing about me.
And at some point I stopped complaining. You know, I stopped and I started complaining. The started creating the world I wish to live in.
I spend time with the people I work with. I spend time with the people I love. I listen deeply. I really wanna know what ails them. I really wanna know how I can help them.
You and I live in a time when there's a heck of a lot more information and a heck of a lot more wisdom that's available to people. It really is. You and I live in a time where we are now empowered to help each other in a more authentic way. You can keep listening to the committee, the invisible committee in your head telling you, you can't do this. You're not good enough. You're not a this, you're not a that. You're to this. You're to that. Just be one step ahead of your client and be willing to help others and be willing to give your gifts. Be willing to learn on the job. We're empowered to help each other at some point. I just empowered myself to help other people. I wasn't gonna let anybody stop me. I wasn't waiting for anybody to crown me and say, okay, you can now see any kind of client that you wish to help them in all the ways that you know how to help them. Mm-hmm. Started helping the people around me who wanted my help, started helping the people who asked for my help. I started coaching the people who asked me for information or ideas or advice.
There's a naturalness to you and I to all of us, to how we help each other.
My friends, all the innovation in the health, in the health fields, really. Um, and I'm talking more specifically about in the nutrition field, in the personal growth field,
when it comes to helping people with their day in, day out, health concerns and food and body challenges, all that innovation is coming from far outside the mainstream. It can come from anywhere. It needs to come from.
Don't wait till you die to empower yourself to help people.
It's silly. Can start doing it yesterday.
And the thing is, the coaching fields are still relatively new. They are still at the leading edge. They are still evolving and changing and growing. So can you liberate yourself from the need to be mainstream? Can you get comfortable being in a profession where you're kind of a maverick? You're kind of at the cutting edge. This where you are.
So you have to put on those clothes. You have to be in that universe 'cause that's where you are anyway. Can you be authentically you? Can you be fresh? Can you be a little daring?
This is about helping each other along our journey. Of course, you're not gonna help people that you're not qualified to help you understand that.
But help to people that you are qualified to help do your best.
You know, there are plenty of people who will really get what you're about. They exist. There are plenty of people who are happy to see a coach.
I know I've seen it. I've watched it happen. I was living at a time when there were no coaches and I was living at a time where there were some health coaches. And I'm living at a time now where there's more and more and more health coaches and truth. There will be more and more people looking for honest solutions to their food and body challenges. Honest solutions, real solutions.
Now at the same time, welcome to Planet Earth. There are people who only want the typical mainstream approaches and practitioners and solutions. Great. Let them go where they need to go. You don't need that person to be your client. You don't want that person to be your client. You want to be in relationship with people who want to be in relationship with you. This is life. This is how we do it. And it's all good. There is something and someone for everyone.
If you've committed yourself to helping people, there's, there's a clientele that's designed for you. So your job is to just keep focusing on your gifts and what you do best and what inspires you. What calls you the most. That's your job.
Just keep focusing on your gifts. Focus on what you do best. Focus on what inspires you. Focus on what's calling you.
Now, of course, if somebody doesn't get what you do, if somebody doesn't appreciate it or they're not willing to understand or they dismiss you, your approach, your education, great.
That's a sign to not waste your valuable time and life force with them. And just move on. Just cross them off your list. Somebody's not interested in dating you. Great. Cross them off your list. Somebody doesn't like the way you look great. Cross them off your list. You don't need to have them in your universe. You don't need them in your kingdom or your queendom.
Remember, my friends, always, always, always, always, always feel free to educate and explain to others about what you do. But you never, ever need to be defensive about who you are and what you do in anything.
So a lot of times we need to strengthen our psychic and emotional immune systems with your belief in the power of the truth. If you know what you have to offer has value, that's the most important thing. Believe in that. Value yourself. Strengthen your psychic immune system. Don't leak energy with fear and oh my God, this person doesn't believe in me. That person doesn't believe in me. That person said this insult to me. And this is, people have their opinions.
When you and I are free of the opinions of others. Wow, are we free? Yeah, open to feedback, open to constructive feedback.
But if you're constantly being jerked in every direction about people's opinions of you,
it's a waste of time.
Oftentimes, my friends unconsciousness complains when you try to wake it up. The parts of you and me that are unconscious, when we start to see the light, when we start to wake up, yeah, we're gonna b***h and moan and groan and complain.
When the world is trying to wake up and see itself. It complains when unconscious people, people who are a little asleep, people who are a little bit in the dark, when the lights come on initially we complain.
It's the nature of waking up. Oftentimes, not always, but oftentimes. So there will be complaints in the world,
especially if you are doing something that has value. Believe it or not, just because what you and I do is good and has value, doesn't mean it's going to be easily rewarded. Oscar Wilde, uh, had a great line. He said, no good deed will go unpunished. I love that because I've noticed that at various points in my life, you do good in the world and somebody wanna punish you for it. Sometimes that's their problem. Truly, you and I are far better than that. Don't let that stop you from doing good deeds.
Carl Young had a great line. He said, you meet your destiny on the road. You take to avoid it.
You meet your destiny on the road you take to avoid it. Which I think is another way of saying, doesn't matter where you go, doesn't matter where you and I like to run or hide. Life finds us. Our destiny finds us.
There's no hiding from a higher power. There's no hiding from a higher wisdom.
You are seen, you are noticed by life.
So we're here to get comfortable at the edge. 'cause that's where we live. You're in an innovative helping profession. That's a good thing. It's good to be at the edge. It is good to be a little bit of a maverick. It's good to be doing something that's more innovative.
Personally, I think it's way more interesting. I think it's way more exciting. Uh, you'll have less regrets on your deathbed is what I'm anticipating.
There's a darn good chance you're gonna be more effective because as you have seen and hopefully noticing in your studies and your studies of life, of the world, of people, of clients, of yourself, of noticing things in your studies, in this training, the solutions that we have been using, the solutions that seem to be available to us collectively when it comes to weight and body image and overeating, and binge eating and emotional eating, and all the nutrition linked health concerns. The solutions we have been offered in general are woefully inadequate.
That's why we step out to the edge. We explore, we learn, we grow, and we come back having visited some new turf and some new territory and some new lands with some new discoveries, some new gifts. And so we've been doing in this training, as far as I'm concerned, you're always gonna be rewarded in the end. I believe when we have the willingness to step outside the usual
in search of a deeper answer,
when we step outside the usual in search for a higher answer, a better answer,
that truly addresses all of who we are as human beings.
The world doesn't always treat us so well.
It's not easy to be on planet earth and have a body and deal with all the body stuff you gotta deal with.
Not easy to be a human being and have all the stress that we have and all the responsibilities that we have, and all the confusion that's out there. What do I do? Who do I marry? What do I do with these kids? What do I do in my life? How do I make money? How do I deal with my challenges and my issues and my emotions and, and, and this body fat and these unwanted eating habits and my appetite? It's, it's not easy.
So why do we need to be good to each other?
So why you need to be good to yourself starts there.
You know, in any time in human history and in any field of endeavor, there's always forces, correct me if I'm wrong, always forces that are working for the good, for the light, for what's right and just for truth. At the same time, there's forces that are a little more greedy.
They are determined to make money at the expense of others. There are forces that are oftentimes operating from unconsciousness, and they are outdated. And they are destructive to the human body and the human soul.
That's why we have global body image challenges.
We are being fed images and information and stories.
We're being fed a religion that is toxic.
And so the human mind, the human heart, the human soul becomes confused. It gets hurt, it gets wounded. It bleeds. It cries, and it tries everything it can try to feel better about itself. Buy this, buy that, do this diet, do that diet. Exercise your brains out, and someday you'll have that perfect body and then everything will be okay.
So many people, that's what they've been fed by the world can't avoid it for the most part.
So you are one of the good guys.
You are working for the light. You are working for consciousness, you are working for betterment. You are working on behalf of a higher understanding.
What do you represent? What do you wish to represent?
Represent something greater. That's the team you wanna be on. Really, there's a lot of great, well organized efforts in this world to support health. And there's well organized efforts to prevent it. It's not always obvious. So this is earth, this is, this is where we live. We live on a planet of some interesting opposites.
So you and I have an interesting job to do. Can you embrace the reality of this world and find your way in it? It's a contradictory world. It's not an easy world. It's okay. It's okay to admit that it's confusing. There's a lot of nonsense. There's hurts, there's a lot of boo-boos happening.
Can we embrace all that and say, okay, okay, this is the way it is. I understand that. And I'm here to do good.
And to do good in this world often takes effort. It often takes great effort. Look at anyone that you might know who's trying to do good in the world. Oftentimes they're working for a nonprofit organization that's scrambling for pennies. It's not easy to do good in this world when it, it's not easy to do. Do good for the environment. It's not easy to do good for animals. It's not easy to be good for nature. It's not easy to be to do good for children. It's not easy to do good for world hunger.
It takes effort. It's okay.
And you know, I used to think that if I'm doing good work, that this should be an easy thing.
And it seems like the helping professions, our governments, our schools, should make it easy to do good.
But I think, you know, by now, doing good work and earning a good living from it is not a privilege. I, I wish it was. I really do. It's not an automatic privilege in any way. It is not part of the fabric of our economic system. Therefore, it takes a certain kind of commitment. It will be far easier for you to go out and get a job that does not necessarily serve others in any way and earn a living at it.
It might even be easier to get a job where the things that your company does or produces might hurt people in certain ways.
I wish the world was different. So it takes a special kind of commitment. So I just want you to let go of the dream that this is an easy and glorious path. And at the same time, embrace the knowing that you're doing something that is needed, that is necessary, that serves a higher good, that's honest, that can make a difference for people. That's driven by science and heart and soul.
And that the rewards will come how they come. We don't know how they're gonna come all the time. We just don't
align yourself with the good.
Let's talk about money in that regard. You know, there's this line, money talks. You know, that's kind of true. That's the world we live in. Money talks. Time is money. Money is the bottom line. And it is for so many of the decisions you and I have to make in this life, that that's just the reality. That's okay. You fully deserve money for your good work and your efforts for your good intentions. For your good decisions. You do.
And it's true that oftentimes to do good work in the world helping others, we have to learn how to operate better in the world of money.
In the world of money that's not always so easy and direct and honest and conscious and supportive, which is the way it is. It's a strange setup. So the truth is, the better we become at doing the business of coaching, the better we become at managing our money, at making good decisions around money, making good decisions around how you spend your money, how you spend your energy, what you value.
Do you really need to spend all that money on that?
Where is it best to invest my money?
Hint, always good to invest in yourself. Always good to invest in your loved ones and your kids.
So really what I'm saying is any way you can get support in this realm called learning how to better manage money in this world, any way you can get support in this realm, get it. I mean that you deserve it.
I notice over the years, a lot of people get into this competitive head space in the helping professions, in the coaching professions. My my deep belief is that there is no zero competition when it comes to doing transformative work, helping others.
Healing and transformation is not a competitive field.
It is. If you say it is, it is. If the person next to you says it is, and then you believe them, then you, you're gonna start competing with each other. And you go, well, this is competitive because we're competing. Well, you chose to compete, let go of competition. My friends and competition will let go of you. Simple as that. There is a huge need for honest and sincere helping professionals in the realm of food and body.
When you and I let go of some of the self-chosen stress around competition, when we let go of the self-chosen stress of being perfect, we can focus better on giving our gifts.
And your good work with clients and your sincere efforts with clients is some of the best marketing you could possibly do. I mean that you can build your practice on referrals.
You know this, my friends, that we are an information society. We're inundated with information. There's a lot of noise. You know this, this, there's so much noise. There's so many words, there's so many facts.
That's why wisdom is so valuable.
If you feel you learn some good things in this training, some deep things, if you've been moved, then you understand the value of wisdom. That's what wisdom does. It is priceless. It really is. So when it comes to health and healing, to me, that which has true value in the health and healing professions will become actually more and more valuable. In the past, we have been selling a lot of nonsense to each other when it comes to health and healing. We have been inundating each other with so much useless information and so many nonsense products.
To me, in my observation, people are not getting healthier as they should be in this world.
And the good news is, once again, that's where you come in. Because now you have real wisdom to offer people. You have insights to offer people. You have distinctions that matter. To offer people. Wisdom powerfully trumps information.
Very few people will tell you they had a life, life-changing experience because they went to this coach, that nutritionist, this dietician, and they told them, drink more vegetable juice. And that person's life is forever changed.
You will not remember the person who told you to drink vegetable juice on your deathbed. Chances are you will remember
the people who had an impact on your life.
You and I will remember the people, the situations that helped us see life differently, helped us see the world differently, helped us see ourselves differently, changed our perception in such a a way that we change life, change our health changed, the body changed our outlook changed, our hope changed.
Wisdom came through and we expanded. And that's what we remember.
Your service has real value only when you uphold and believe in that value.
So please do whatever it is that you need to do to support yourself while you go about the business of serving others.
Find to have your practice as a total side gig. Grow, grow it naturally. Grow it organically. Do whatever you need to do to support yourself financially as you go about the business of serving others. And life will reveal to you what you need to do.
Sometimes we have to move through the challenge of being in the work world in jobs that we don't necessarily love, because those jobs are supporting us.
So only let go of that financial support when you are truly, truly, truly, truly ready. Meanwhile, let your job support you.
What a great thing. Let your job support you as you go about the business of helping other people.
You're putting that job to good use.
Believe in the value that you offer.
You know, not only is wisdom more valuable and precious in this day and age of lots of information, but you know what else is important? My friends? Mm-Hmm. You know this. Intuition is important. Spirituality is important. Listening to your soul is important. Being in the body, embodying is important. Our connection to the earth is important. Speaking the truth is important. Sharing the love is important. Agreeing to be here is important.
Embrace what's important. Do what's important.
It is not important to talk about the latest gossip in the movies with the actors and the actresses. And he said this and she said that. And this one is dating this one. And that one smacked that one. And this one did this one to that one. And that one said, who cares?
It's distraction.
Do what's important. What we focus on tends to expand.
Where do you put your energy?
You know, I'm always interested in you really finding your niche as a professional, as a helping professional. What's your special gifts? What's your talents? What's your calling in the coaching field, in a helping profession when it comes to food, body, and health?
And also let it find you. So be patient once again. It doesn't mean you have to be very specific because your niche might be as a generalist, that's okay.
But gradually, as you do this work, more and more you will find
yourself gravitating perhaps in certain directions. That's great. Notice that. Notice what calls you and be patient. It really takes time.
One of my teachers used to say, whenever everybody was raising their hand and everybody was pontificating in the classroom, all the graduate students were showing how smart they thought they were and what they knew and what they were certain about. And Gordon Tappen would say, but what about uncertainty?
And whenever he said that, the room would get very quiet. I could be wrong, but I, I can remember the birds outside getting a little quiet and the crickets getting a little quiet too. I might be making that up. But that's what it sounded like.
It's a lot that we don't know. And that's okay.
You are here to embrace the uncertainty of your life
with a certain sense of dignity, with a certain sense of self-respect, with a certain sense of self-acceptance and self love.
We so want certainty. I want my diet to be certain. I wanna know exactly what I should eat. I know I wanna know exactly when I'm gonna lose this weight and I wanna exactly lose this weight. And I, we, we just wanna be certain
because uncertainty rules, we don't like that. I don't like it. And we can learn to like it just a little more.
Embrace the uncertainty. That's your life. It's okay.
Help your client do the same.
When they do that, they will have less and less and less of a need to turn to food or other unwanted habits to regulate
their internal experience, to regulate their unwanted emotions, to regulate their challenge with not certain. I don't know.
Please my friends, be willing to follow a path of generosity and trust. Don't be fooled by the fear and the negativity of the world.
If you truly are a devotee of the media, if you truly wish to wake up in the morning and let the newspaper or CNN or the Washington Post or the New York Times give you your talking points for the day.
If you believe everything you are told, you will likely be believing in a world that is filled with fear and negativity.
Yes, there is fear in the world. Yes, there is negativity in the world.
What I'm saying is that the world is far more than that.
It really is. It's not the picture we are painted. Create the world you wish to live in through your attitude and your actions and your way of being.
Do not fall in line with the world that you are told exists.
Fall in line with the world that you know in your heart. Heart ought to exist.
So follow a generous and heart-centered direction. Believe in the guidance of your own heart. Believe in something greater. Trust.
Isn't that what so much of the world needs?
And if you think it is, then great. Do it. That's how we change this whole thing.
You know the journey for sure has its ups and downs.
Difficulties are predictable. Your clients will have setbacks. You will have setbacks. We will take a step back.
You know this by now. One of the great measures of growth and transformation is when you and I can spend less and less and less time in darkness and self-rejection and self attack during the hard times, during the setbacks,
stand by yourself. Do not abandon yourself. Do not abandon your body. Do not jump ship. Stay with yourself. Stay present.
Love yourself like you would love anyone that you love when they're going through a hard time.
And then demonstrate that to others. Model that behavior to others. Model that behavior to the clients that sit with you.
Yeah. Mr. And Mr. Client, here's what I noticed. Whenever you take a step back for you, it's like the sky is falling. Sky's not falling. Welcome to planet Earth. We have setbacks galore. We take steps forward and we take steps back. You know what that means? It means you're human. And guess what? Every other human, they're human too. They're as imperfect as you are. And probably a lot more
when your client goes into darkness, when you go into darkness, when you overeat, when you bingy and you didn't want to, when you didn't think you would and you wish you wouldn't have.
Do something different. My friends. Stand by yourself. Love yourself. That is the remedy.
You gotta run all around thinking, I gotta attack myself. I gotta gotta figure this out. Nothing to figure out. Yeah, you can look at the details of the situation and you don't kick yourself when you're down. Now, one of the ways to spend less time for you and I and our clients and darkness and in fear. Fear is, you know, have ways that we can remember. Ways that we can reconnect, like reminders that can help us return to ourselves. Reminders that can help us return to a to a just a moment of wholeness. Anything that helps me and you reconnect to our true source in times of taking a step backwards in times of darkness. Anything that helps us remember our wholeness is gold.
When that happens for me, when I'm down, when I'm kicking myself, when I'm down, when I start to speak unkind or depressive things to myself, yeah, I I, there's people I call up, they help remind me of who I really am and what is really happening. That's one way I do that professionally for others. So do you. But here's some reminders.
Remember your calling and how you felt called to do something greater
when you're in darkness. Remember that your life is guided by the unseen.
Your life is guided by something greater. Your life is guided by a higher power.
Remember what helped you heal and transform.
Know that you can always help give that gift to others.
Remember that one of our practices is to agree to be here. No matter how hard things may feel,
we are given challenges. We are given problems. And the solution to our problems are seeded within our problems. There are seeds, we gotta be present. We gotta water them a little bit. Agree to be here again and again and again and again. When things get difficult, remember that life can be magical. Sometimes the magic is around the corner. Have you had magical times in your life? You know what? They felt like they exist. Yep. Life is challenging. It has pain and has suffering. Also has some magic. Remember the magic. Remember that this too shall pass. It always has. You always made it through. And you've gotten to this place.
I think the universe is gonna pull out the rug from under your feet. Now, okay, well you've gotten through some hard times, but okay, this is the, this is it. Now you're gonna get squashed like a bug on a windshield. I don't think that's what life has in store for you.
I think we do need to remember that life in a strange way is short. And your real life actually begins right now.
Nothing away for zero. Your life begins right now. The real one.
Same with your client. That's what you're teaching them. It's what you're reminding them of and all the little ways that you do that.
I believe that in this work, if you believe in something greater, then that's a good thing. I think the more we tune into our own divine guidance for our own journey, the more we can tune into the divine guidance of another. You learn how to listen in to your own little angels. You learn how to listen in to the voice of the beyond. You learn how to listen in to what a higher power is saying to you and how it is speaking to you and how it is moving you in certain directions. The more you pay attention to that, my friends in your own life,
the better you are at helping others do that for themselves, the better you are at being a good interpreter
for someone else's internal guidance system that they're not even seeing, noticing, or paying attention to because they're in too much pain and fear And suffering around food, body, and health.
When people are in pain and suffering around food, body and health, they're not, they're not listening to the angels. They're not talking to a higher power. They're not tuning into a greater wisdom. They're not accessing the brilliance of life. They're in survival. They're running from a lion.
You are the voice of wisdom for them. You are the voice of reason. You are not here to freak out with them about their weight and commiserate with them about their perfectionism and help them lose five pounds exactly from this part of their body, or 25 or whatever the heck it is, so they can finally be happy and be the real me. That's not your job.
Your job is to help people see that they have a bigger destiny other than losing a bunch of pounds of body fat
and losing weight is not their primary objective in life.
You are gradually sneaking them into that.
So in my experience, we are conducting a higher power,
healing, and transformation are oftentimes far more than just changing and manipulating and moving around our food and nutrition. Even though you can be of great service to someone manipulating and changing and moving around their food and nutrition for sure.
But you've gotta realize oftentimes it's a lot more than that.
Sometimes the more we love, the more we heal, the more we love self, the more we heal, the more we just love, the more we heal, the more we connect with our own divine spark, the more we can potentially elevate our metabolism. Because our divine spark just might be the core of what we have.
The more you and I as professionals tune into the wisdom of life, the wisdom of the universe, the wisdom of a higher power, the more we can be a conduit for something far greater than ourselves. So yes, you are delivering distinctions, you're delivering information. You are suggesting homeworks, you're doing techniques. You are listening for all kinds of dynamic eating psychology and mind-body nutrition distinctions in order to help your client with a complaint that they come to see you with. Absolutely. That's what you're doing.
And if you choose, you can also be a channel, a conduit, a mouthpiece for something far greater than all that information in your head.
A moment of wisdom, a moment of wholeness that you help conduct for your client
might be the entire value of your whole experience together
might be the thing that truly moves them and helps them shift and change and transform.
What a good profession to be in
my friends, our food and body challenges. You know this now, don't you? Our food and body challenges are truly great teachers.
I believe that. Know that because it's true.
Stop wasting your time beating yourself up.
Or when you're finished beating yourself up, when you're black and blue enough go, oh, huh, maybe this food and body challenge is here to teach me that beating myself up just makes me black and blue and doesn't actually help me. Okay? Your food and body challenge, your client's food and body challenge, they're great teachers. You are here to help interpret that for your client to help conduct that wisdom into their life. It doesn't mean the moment they walk through the door, you go, okay, well your food and body challenges are getting, you integrate it. You listen to them, you get to know them. You gradually and slowly at the pace that they naturally go in relative to who they are and what they know about life and the world. You are inviting them into a deeper understanding. But you know, you know inside yourself that their food and body challenge, it's a whispering from a higher wisdom. It has important messages for us. It could be nutritional messages, it could be messages about how we're living our life. It could be our lifestyle. It could be about stress. It could be about self-chosen stressors. It could be about food allergies. It could be about a relationship. It could be about love. It could be about spirituality, sexuality, all the things that you've learned. It's different for everyone.
And here's the kicker, our food and body challenges. They're not here to torture us.
They're not here to make us feel miserable. They are here to help us grow.
So when you see your client who has a food and body challenge, no matter how much pain and suffering they're in, yes, I want you to have compassion for their pain and suffering, but at the same time, inside yourself, I want you to smile inside yourself knowing that their challenge is here to help them grow. And they're now working with you and you're gonna do your best to help them listen to the whisperings of the universe, the messages from a higher wisdom. You're gonna help them see that their food and body cha, that their food and body cha, it's a great teacher and here's how it's helping you grow. Let's do this because when you learn your lessons from the great teacher, what happens? You can graduate.
Our food and body challenges are doorways that we walk through. You don't know where that doorway is gonna lead with your client when they come in with their weight challenge. You don't know where it's going, but you're gonna find out because you know the questions to ask. You know the conversations to have. You know what to listen for
and you're gonna figure it out as best you can.
Ah, my friends, our food and body challenges are asking us to embody here in this world.
They're asking us to agree to be here because so many of us, we don't wanna be here. And if you don't wanna be here, you have a damn good reason. You have many good reasons. You might have a thousand good reasons. And honestly, I would agree with all of them.
And here we are. Might as well do it. Might as well be here because we're here for a reason. We're here for a higher purpose other than to be tortured by a bunch of pounds of body fat other than to be tortured by our appetite, to be tortured by our relationship of food. That's not why you came here.
But we often have to learn certain lessons through our relationship with food.
So we can say that our food and body challenges are ultimately a path. And that path leads to love. That path, leads to consciousness. That's where it wants to go.
Doesn't look like it, doesn't smell like it, doesn't feel like it at the time, but you have to know that that what is on the other side of your client's. Food and body challenges is love. I love myself. I am loving my life. Are we gonna perfectly love ourselves and ly love life? No, but man, will we be doing that a lot more,
my friends?
Some final training thoughts.
You know, again, I wanna say congratulations, congratulations, congratulations on all your efforts that it took to complete this training. I really mean that. I am super grateful to you. I really am. It is an absolute honor and privilege to be on this journey with you. We may not have interacted a lot or much or some of us any, but I'm aware of you. I've at least seen your name. I've seen some of your tests, I've seen a lot of things.
And we've been doing something good together. We've been doing something special together. We've been doing something magical together.
My apologies if everything wasn't always perfect. We really do our best. We really, really do our best. We as an organization, as a company, as an institute of learning, as an online institute of learning, uh, we do our best as a group of people. We're just a group of people trying to do good work in the world. That's what we are. I mean, really at the end of the day, if you can look at any of our staff, our present staff, our staff over the years, we're always doing work
with the goal of doing something good in the world. So I have been fortunate, I have been blessed to have that journey, to have chosen that journey or perhaps that journey has chosen me. Perhaps it's both. And
within that journey, we are again, we do our best. It's not always gonna look perfect. And that's okay.
I hope you have been able to let go of anything that hasn't worked for you. Anything I've said any way that I've been, we've been, that doesn't quite resonate for you, doesn't work for you. Discard it, excrete it, throw it out. Forget about it. Don't waste your energy with it and just use whatever it is that was good that you learned. Take the goodness, I really mean it when I say I hope you feel good about yourself for your efforts in this training. And you bet that I hope you received far more than your money's worth.
And here's what I know. If you don't think you've received your money's worth, I believe that you still can
in how you continue to integrate the material and how you take it out into world and serve other people.
My goal from the start, from the day I started teaching, has been to share with you the best of what I know to share with you. What I've seen work from just my efforts, my studies, my experience, my countless hours working in so many different ways in the food and body and health and eating psychology universe. I've really covered a lot of turf over the years. And I have endeavored to empower you as best I can to help others in the unique way that you are designed to help them.
So it isn't not me teaching you how to be me, it's me hopefully inspiring you to be you with the tools and the insights and the distinctions and the maps and the skills that you now have.
So now it's your time and now it's your turn to give your gifts.
I my wish for you, my friends, is that you find a way to celebrate yourself in this education, in your efforts. Find a way to celebrate that. Go out to dinner, go out for a meal, take a walk, be with someone close to you that you care about, that cares about you, that can celebrate you, that can honor you, that can uplift you. Do something. Do something that helps you celebrate you. Just because I also hope that whatever is your deepest wish with this education, whatever is your deepest wish when it comes to what you do, with what you've learned, that that comes to pass for you. That, that you have that in your life. That you have the kind of success that you want. And when I say success, I mean success on all levels.
I really hope, and I know I I I know that you'll continue to work on yourself. I hope you continue to work on yourself in the kind of way where you are able to be generous with yourself. You are able to be loving towards yourself, and you give yourself the kind of unconditional acceptance that you give other people that you're very good at when it comes to how you, how you love on others.
You have some great things to give to people. I know how powerful this work can be. I hope you've experienced that in some way. I hope you've been able to move forward in your own personal life, in your own professional life. I know you'll continue to do so. I hope some of the gifts that might have come your way through this training just continue to keep on giving.
And I wish you all the best on your journey. I hope you hope you stay connected. Hope you stay connected with each other. I hope you continue on. Um, in our social media universe, we have an alumni group that you will automatically be, um, added to if you choose to participate, is, is active and it is important to just stay connected to people that inspire you, people that are in alignment with you, people that can cheer, lead you on. I hope you have that in your life and you do your best to create that. Uh, if you wish to continue to do more with us, we have a few other trainings that you'll hear about that are online trainings. And if we have not yet officially met in person, I hope that gets to happen in the future, my friends. So once again, you know, there will be more to come. You will hear from us and hopefully you'll enjoy hearing from us. And if not, oh well, um, it's been an honor, it's been a privilege. God bless, I wish for all good things for you and your family and your loved ones. And let's go out and let's just keep sharing the love and light some candles, light other people's candles. That's what I'm saying. Be that light that you know you already are. You just jump in, take the risk. Be yourself. Now's The time. Congratulations, my friends on a job Well done and take care.
